In 1963, KH TB Rafe’i Ali, Hj. St Mastioh’s son-in-law, became caretaker of the pesantren. He set to work reorganizing and leading the pesantren and even gave it a name – An-Nizhomiyyah. This name was adopted from a madrasah in Baghdad, Nizhamiyah (established by Wazir Nizam al-Mulk), which was once home to one of Islam’s greatest philosophers, al-Ghazali, who studied and became a professor there in 1090 CE.
