The program on "Open, Distance and e-Learning for Islamic Transformation through Pesantren", supported by ICIP and the Ford Foundation (2007-2010) aims to transform pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and the communities surrounding them in more modern, open and skilled communities and present an inclusive form of Islam. It is hoped that this program will provide the respective communities taking part in it with information, knowledge and skills in accordance with local needs. It is hoped that this program will help increase the number of high school graduates, students who go on to university and students with skills needed by their local communities. |

The targets of the Millennium Development Goals include a reduction in poverty, obtaining universal basic education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, all of which must be achieved by 2015. As a result, Indonesia as a developing country needs to work hard to improve acces to education for society and to improve the quality of educaiton. Besides this, Indonesia previously also took part in the Dakar Framework for Action in 2000 to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of Education For All, especially in improving access to education for those who have limited facilities due to poverty. |

In order for the program to meet its stated aims, 9 primary activities were prepared and carried out by the International Center for Islam and Pluralism. While some of these activities are now complete, others such as monitoring and evaluation will be carried out at regular intervals throughout the program.
